LAHORE: As many as 12,879 members of the Lahore High Court Bar Association (LHCBA) will exercise their right to vote on Saturday (today) to elect their new representatives for the year 2016-17.
The total number of members of the LHCBA is 2,6431, including 1,304 women voters. At least 5,223 members of the LHCBA are ineligible because of non-payment of their dues. New members of the LHCBA who got registered after August 28 have not been given the right to vote yet because the Pakistan Bar Council has set the condition that a bar member should register with the bar at least six months before the election.
Last year, the number of bar members was 19,672.
Bar Election Board Chairman Shahzad Shaukat said that unlike previous elections of the bar, no one would be allowed to cast vote manually. He requested the bar members to get themselves registered with the new system to exercise their right to vote.
The polling would start at 9am and continue till 5pm with a lunch break from 1pm to 2pm. Before the polling, the bar would hold its general house meeting at 8am.
There is a one-on-one contest between Ramzan Chaudhry of the Ahsan Bhoon Group and Rana Zia-ur-Rehman of the Professional Group for the office of the bar president.
For the office of the vice president, six candidates are in the field — Rashid Lodhi, Sheikh Sakhawat, Sardar Tahir Shahbaz Khan, M. R. Awan, Chaudhry Muhammad Saleem and Mian Waseem.
Four candidates are contesting the election for the seat of the bar secretary — Jawad Ashraf, Uzma Razzaq Khan, Anas Ghazi and Sharjeel Adnan Sheikh.
